Exercise (Treadmill) Stress Test

What is a Exercise (Treadmill) Stress Test

A exercise stress test, or some may refer to as a treadmill test helps our cardiologist determine how well your heart works under "stress." As you exercise the body demands more oxygen, therefore your heart must pump more blood to meet the demand. The test can show if blood supply to the heart is reduced during exercise. It can also help our cardiologist know the type and level of exercise that is most appropriate for you.

Some of the reasons our cardiologist may recommend this test is to help:
  • Diagnose coronary artery disease.
  • Determine if your symptoms of chest pain, shortness of breath or lightheadedness is related to your heart.
  • Establish a safe level of physical activity
  • Determine your risk of serious heart-related conditions
  • Check to see if there is improved coronary artery circulation following certain procedures in patients with coronary artery disease
Depending on the outcome of the exercise stress test it may be recommended to proceed with more tests such as a cardiac catheterization or nuclear stress test.

Instructions prior to testing

  • Wear comfortable clothing and walking or running shoes
  • AVOID caffeinated products such as coffee, chocolates, or sodas at least 6 hours prior to the test
